EVHS to Focus on Rental and Leasehold Sector From 2022 & OLEV Grant Guide

The Office for Zero Emissions (OZEV) Chargepoint Grants team has announced that from April 2022, the EVHS will be targeted at people in rented and leasehold accommodation and will be removed for private homeowners.

The existing scheme will run for another year until 31 March 2022, by which time OZEV expects the market to have reached sufficient maturity to operate effectively without Government intervention. After this date the scheme will focus solely on rental and leasehold properties (especially flats) where charging provision is currently more limited and potentially more challenging to secure. The objective of the reformed EVHS is to stimulate demand in the rental and leasehold sectors, and help ensure people living in this type of accommodation are able to access EV charging provision at home.

Subsidies

In the context of home charging, the “OLEV Grant” refers to a government grant for electric car home chargers, provided by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).

  • The OLEV Grant, specifically named the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), provides up to £350 off the cost of purchasing & installing a home charging point.
  • It’s available for most electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars, old or new.
  • You can claim one charger per eligible vehicle and up to two eligible vehicles per household.
  • An additional grant of up to £250 is available to Scottish EV drivers via the Energy Savings Trust Scotland.

OLEV also offer the separate Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant which can be claimed by any business, charity or public authority and provides up to £350 off the cost of purchasing & installing workplace charging points, up to 40 sockets.

How do I qualify for the OLEV Grant?

To qualify for OLEV’s EVHS grant, you need to have purchased an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle or leased one for at least six months.

  • You must have off-street parking.
  • Your plugin hybrid car or full electric vehicle must have been purchased after October 2016. If you do not have a car yet, you must be able to show proof of your order.
  • You must install an OLEV-approved EV charger.
  • You must use an OLEV-approved EV charger installer like EN+ Technologies.

Which vehicles are eligible for the OLEV Grant?

Not all plug-in vehicles are eligible for the OLEV EVHS grant. All full battery electric vehicles are eligible, but plug-in hybrid vehicle CO2 emissions must be calculated below 50g/km.

How do I claim the OLEV Grant?

Additional grant in Scotland

Through the Energy Saving Trust Scotland, the Scottish Government offers Scottish residents an additional grant of up to £250 (or £350 for those in the most remote areas of Scotland), on top of the EVHS grant.

Just as with the EVHS grant, and in addition to it, EN+ Techonologies assists our Scottish customers to take advantage of this grant.

Does the grant apply in workplaces/businesses?

Yes. The OLEV grant applies for workplaces provided it has the following conditions:

  • Your work place has an off street parking facility.
  • Your employees or workers need not have electric cars to apply for the OLEV grant or installation of an electric charging point, however, the company needs to be able to demonstrate that they have a need for charging points in the future.
  • Your charging point must be installed by an OLEV-approved installer company.
